Governor Brown Signs Domestic Worker Bill of Rights (AB 241)

Governor Jerry Brown recently signed AB 241, also known as the “Domestic Worker Bill of Rights.”  Under this new law, California workers in many household occupations will be entitled to overtime pay (at the rate of 1.5 times their regular rate of pay) for all hours worked in excess of 9 hours per day or 45 hours per week.  AB 241 was actually the state’s second attempt at passing a domestic workers’ bill of rights.  Last year AB 889, which went even further by also guaranteeing meal and rest breaks to domestic workers, was vetoed by the Governor.

AB 241, which was sponsored by Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco), adds §1450 to the California Labor Code.  It takes effect on January 1, 2014.  You can find the full text of AB 241 here.
